Pine Wood Derby Race
Both kids got to do their first pinewood derby race this year. Which meant both kids Brian got to design a pinewood derby car. The kids Brian worked very hard on the cars! Actually both the kids and Brian worked hard and it paid off because both Cameron and Addy did awesome and finished in the top 3rd of their races. It was super fun to watch and Brian couldn't believe how much more advanced things have become since he did it as a scout. The racetrack was fancy and there was a big screen displaying everyone's times. It was a fun event and the kids Brian is already plotting how to win next year's race!

PhD in Hockey!
On Saturday Cameron got to play his first game as goalie. It was was an 8:40 am game instead of 7:00 am which was awesome! He looked so tough in his goalie gear but it looked like a ton of work to get up and down over and over again on the ice. Cameron learned that he likes skating more rather than playing goalie. I learned a lot about myself during the game. I am not made to be a goalie mom. It was way too much pressure and I was nervous for Cameron the entire time. When the other team would come racing toward him I would physically feel pain. Good thing is Cameron didn't feel any pain and enjoyed it a lot more than I did! I am so proud of how hard he has been working at hockey. It's been 5 months of practices and games and he has had the best attitude through it all. Certainly better than mine. Last month Cameron was awarded a PhD for his team which stands for Pride, Hustle and Desire. His coaches said he is always working hard on the ice and is a good teammate. He was the first kid on the team to get it! Sorry Papa, you aren't the only one with a PhD in the family.

2020 Ski Trip Getaway #1: Chapter 3
Day 3. I was excited for Day 3. Cameron had decided that he'd had enough of skiing and preferred to spend the day in the lodge with me. I was totally fine with this as well. A day of warmth and reading in the lodge? I'm in. That morning Addy and Brian got ready for skiing and Cam and I packed up and had our stuff ready for the lodge. We checked out of our lovely cabin and got to the mountain right as it opened. It was a much better day- no rain or snow and it looked like the sun was trying to peak out.
Addy and Brian took to the hills and Cam and I got cozy in the lodge. The next 2 hours were awesome. We read, we played games, we ate food, we stayed dry, it was bliss. We enjoyed the virtual empty lodge to ourselves. As I heard people start to come inside for breaks all of them were commenting on how perfect it was outside. The clouds cleared and the sun came out and it was beautiful. Shortly after Brian and Addy came in and neither of them could stop talking about how amazing it was out there. The conditions were perfect, it wasn't busy, it wasn't wet, it was awesome.
Well Cameron is not one to be left out so he decided he wanted to ski after all. Even though we had asked him a million times if he was sure he didn't want to ski, it turns out he wasn't. I proceeded to go to the car and unpack to try and find all of our ski stuff so we could get back out there. Wasn't my first choice, but this was a ski trip after all, felt like we should ski if he wanted to. While Addy and Brian ate lunch, Cam and I got ready for our afternoon on the slopes. The weather was perfect and the crowds were non-existent since it was a random Monday. On top of this, Brian offered to ski with Cameron and I got to ski with Addy. This was sounding better and better! Turns out it was the best thing that could have happened on our ski trip getaway. The conditions really were perfect, everyone was in a good mood and it was awesome. It more than made up for how terrible the prior day was and we stayed until the lifts closed and had the best time. Proof that fun was had by all on the mountain.

2020 Ski Trip Getaway #1: Chapter 2
Day 2 of the trip started off great. We got an early start (but not crazy early) because it was only about a 35 minute drive to the mountain. The forecast called for a possible 8 inches of snow so we were ready with our layers and a shovel! We got to park right next to lodge and were already enjoying the perks of not having to do a 3 hour morning drive. This was fabulous!
Cameron wanted to start on the tow rope so we all did that first. Mistake #1. It was yet another new type of tow rope and he wasn't exactly sure how to do it. He lost his grip on the holder part and was just holding the line. I was following him and tried giving him my holder. Mistake #2. It accidentally hit him and knocked him over. Within 5 minutes on the hill he was on the ground in tears holding up the tow rope line. We pepped talked him out of it and said it was best to skip the tow rope and go straight for the chairlift. In order to get to the right one we had to go down another part of the hill. I told Brian and Addy to go ahead and Cam and I would meet them later. Mistake #3. Cameron was really scared of the hill because it was new. Also because of the snow (which really was rain pretending to be snow) you couldn't see very far in front of you to know what it was really like. I gave my very best motivation talks but Cameron's stubbornness prevailed and he took off his skis and walked down the hill. We weren't 20 minutes in and I think we both wanted to call it a day.
I managed to persuade him into getting on the chair lift and on the ride up we made a deal. He had to be "all in" today and if he still didn't like it he didn't have to ski the next day. But he had to give today a solid effort and not give up before he even started. He agreed and I thought my challenges were behind me. Mistake #4. At the top of the chairlift we got off and the wind was so strong and the snow/rain was so heavy it was hard to see. I again had to pull out my best inspirational chats, I channelled all of my Oprah influence and after at least 10 minutes of not moving, he agreed to start. I'm not sure how long it took to get down that hill but in my head it was hours. The next few runs were better and his fear continued to decrease. Unfortunately the snow/rain and wind combo continued to increase and it didn't take long for me to realize that no matter how many layers you put on when you are skiing in the equivalent of rain you get cold and wet. We made the most of our "all in attitude" and skied until we were hungry for lunch, which was about 2 hours later.
We couldn't find Addy and Brian but we headed to the lodge and got our lunch and attempted to dry off. You don't actually realize how wet you are until you have to put soaking wet gloves and hats back on. You literally could wring water out of them. When we got back out it wasn't long before we ran into Addy and Brian. Addy was in tears, was soaking wet and wanted to leave. At the sound of hearing this Cameron declared he wanted to leave. I looked at Brian and he knew it was 3 against 1. We skied down the hill together and packed it up for the day. The forecast for 8 inches of snow didn't materialize because it was rain, not snow. No one complained about heading back to the cabin early. Skiing does not bring out my "best self" and I was worried about having to replaying this the next day. Day 2 was a total bust.

2020 Ski Trip Getaway #1: Chapter 1
For this year's ski season Brian and I decided to try something new. Instead of keeping weekends open to try and spend a 12-14 hour day getting to and from the ski resort for 6 hours of skiing we decided to plan some destination trips and do back-to-back days of skiing. We currently have two trips planned and our first one was last weekend to Mt. Baker. It had some highs (chapter 3) and lows (chapter 2), but overall was a great weekend!
The kids had no school last Monday (because why not?) so we rented a cabin near Mt. Baker for Saturday-Monday. We left Saturday afternoon so Cameron didn't have to miss hockey (another challenge to this year's ski season). It was an easy drive and the cabin was awesome. Perfect for what we needed and much more enjoyable than a hotel. The kids were thrilled to have space to run around and Brian and I were thrilled to not have them sleep in our room. The trip was off to a great start!
